KEFALONIA

GASTRONOMY

Although an island, Kefalonia is famous for its meat, in terms of traditional cuisine. Meat pie with goat meat, goat stewed, braised rabbit, braised goat with potatoes, and all this combined with feta and kefalotyri of excellent quality; and wine that varies from region to region…
Robola in Omala valley, Vostylidi and Tsaousi, Thiniatiko, Mavrodaphne in Paliki! All infused with aromas and flavours.
As regards more vegetarian options, bacalaopita with red squash, mixed green pie with wild herbs, octopus pie, “Tsigaridia” mixed green and herbs with rice and tomato, tomato bisque (with small pasta), fried potatoes and fresh eggs.
And for breakfast, or a lighter meal, or dinner, what could be better than “Strapatsada”: a blend of fresh farm eggs, fresh tomatoes and feta cheese! Or the famous “Riganada”: with toasted rye bread, olive oil, fresh tomato and feta cheese, topped with olives and oregano from the mountains!
It should be noted that because of the long Venetian occupation, many Italian words are used in the gastronomy of the place, such as “aliada”, (from the Italian word aglio meaning garlic) is garlic infused mashed potatoes served with cod and boiled greens. The words “mandola and mandolato” which refer to traditional almond-based sweets are delivered from the word “mandorla”, meaning almond in Italian language.
